saw a handful of republicans on chat shows saying, oh, we'll get the vapors and faint if any defense spending increases are not carried out. what he missed was they were recycling the same four or five republican politicians, and in point of fact that's not where the, certainly not where the country is, it's not where the modern republican party is, it's not where the republicans in the house and the senate are. there's some guys on spending committees who'd like to spend money, that's understandable. but at the end of the day, we should probably figure out how to give the pentagon more flexibility, but they need to save the same amount of dollars promised in the sequester as the rest of the government does. and so the president misjudged believing that republicans would panic during the negotiations on fiscal cliff. he kept waiting for the republicans to put the sequester on the table in order to give it away. and that never happened. the republicans, let's delay the sequester two months, and president obama thought the republicans were retreating. oh, good, i'm going to get my tax

the court therefore strike down the defense of marriage act which is one of the cases it will be hearing this week which bans federal benefits for same sex couples legally married in their state. would you streak down that as federal interferences in a state matter? >> you know, i think it is a really complicated issue. i always said that the states have the right to decide. i do believe in traditional marriage. kentucky decided it and i don't think the federal government should tell us otherwise. there are states that have decided in the opposite fashion and i don't think the federal government should tell anybody or any state government how they should decide this. marriage has been a state issue you for hundreds and hundreds of years. doma is complicated because it does provide protection for the states from the federal government part of it federalizes the issue. there is a chance the court could strike down the federalization part of it. if they do i think the way to fix it is maybe to try to make all of the laws more neutral towards the issue. i don't want the government promoting

of irresponsibility in the republican budget is defense. instead of increasing pentagon spending, we should reform it. the most obvious target is the nuclear arsenal larger than anything we need for nuclear deterrence. 10% of our nuclear weapons would decimate russia. a handful of missiles would wipe north korea off the map. yet they propose to spend over 2/3 of a trillion dollars over the next 10 years on this bloated arsenal. before we increase the pentagon budget, maybe we should figure out why the f-35 joint strike fighter, which is now seven years behind schedule, 70% over budget, and the pentagon still doesn't know how it's going to meet the more than $1 trillion in operating and maintenance cost. amazingly the republicans want to increase spending for the pentagon, the only major budget so flawed it can't even be audited. there are bipartisan opportunities to reduce and reform the military, but you're not hearing about it in the republican budget this week. instead of a republican rerun of a bad reality tv show, let's consider working together on areas to change how the government does busines
